Charity Barreathon September 26th 2015

On Saturday September 26th at 2pm, a strong team of Barre Enthusiasts (myself included natch.) will assemble at The Barre HQ on The Quayside to take on their toughest challenge yet.  I’m not talking The Joker, I’m not even talking Ultron.  This, guys and gals, is the Ultimate Barreathon.

Masterminded by Barre Addict Charlotte Currie in her quest to raise funds for The Roy Castle Charity Foundation, the Barreathon is a thing of torture.  It requires serious dedication, focus and sheer willpower to get through the literal marathon of sets and reps.  Want to know what it’s all about?  Of course you do…..

The Barre method takes the principles of ballet and strips them back to the base mechanics.  There’s no dance, no floating gracefully though the air and no beautiful looking lifts. No.  This is hardcore, short, controlled isometric movements which push your muscles to the point of exhaustion forcing those tiny accessory muscles to kick in.  It’s not pretty and nor should it be, if you take The Barre you leave looking like you’ve worked out. Hard.

So, why a charity Barreathon?  Well quite simply because it’s hard work.  We want you to sponsor us and we want you to sponsor us good so to make it worth your while and your hard earned cash, we’ve put together the most gruelling schedule of exercises we could dream up and we’re going to nail each and everyone of them as a team.  If you’re familiar with The Barre regime then you’ll know that the ones we’re doing are the most intense ones out there, if you’re not familiar then take a look at this and use your imagination.  There are a LOT of reps in there and we’re going to make every single one count for something because we believe in this amazing cause….

The whole thing will be recorded and stored in a guarded vault somewhere as evidence of our amazing feat (maybe), but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t come along to the studio and get involved.  There will be regular non-torture-tastic classes running throughout the morning and early afternoon as well as a bake sale and I can vouch personally for the quality of our master-bakers.

We’re running an awesome raffle and we’d love for you to help us out by just taking part in this - you may even win a completely aces prize and everyone loves winning right?!  From Barre classes and magnums of Prosecco through to restaurant meals and Neals Yard goodies, local businesses have done us proud and united to offer up some great prizes so please, drop in to see us and please give what you can, if you can.

If you’d like to sponsor #TeamBarre (and you absolutely should) as we undertake our Barreathon, then we have a Just Giving Page set up and at last count we were still a little short of our £500 target so we’d love for you to take the time to get behind this momentous feat for a super worthy cause.

If you can’t make it on the day but are interested, then keep up with our progress on social media, we’ll be posting to Twitter, Instagram and FaceBook throughout the challenge with live #TeamBarre updates.

So, maybe we’ll see you Saturday, I’ll be the one with the pink hair and the game face…..

The Best Wax in Newcastle…..

You know by now that I’m a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to waxing, particularly that of the intimate variety (Sorry if you’re reading this Dad but this is real important stuff), so when an opportunity crops up to try out a new place then provided it’s using hot wax rather than strip wax, I’m absolutely in.

I’ve favoured the “Hollywood” (that’s everything off folks) since the 90’s (talk about jumping on a beauty trend right?!) and living in London I shared my amazing Brazilian waxer with Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and countless other celebrities, indeed Otylia Roberts was, and still is known as one of the best hot waxers in the world.  When I relocated back to the North East this left me with a bit of an issue, largely existing as a six weekly trip to London for my fix.

Fast forward to right now and the North East is all over the Brazilian / Hollywood waxing “trend” with dedicated waxing salons opening up and existing beauty salons adding the service to their treatment menu’s.  When Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic invited me to  road test their Lycon Hollywood wax, they didn’t have to ask twice……

I arrived at the clinic and was introduced to Alex, my therapist for the afternoon.  After being shown to a super cute and kitsch floral treatment room, Alex gave me instructions usually reserved for the OBGYN clinic: Undress my lower half and cover up with the towel provided.

Now for anyone new to this type of procedure, this is totally standard; you have to understand that to get a perfectly clean finish, you have to be sans underwear, it’s just that simple.  Alex is an absolute pro - she understands that clients often book this particular appointment with trepidation and she instantly makes you feel at ease.  There’s no awkwardness, it’s not uncomfortable at all, she tells me that she’s done it for so long now it’s the same as doing an eyebrow shape or a leg wax, it’s all about precision and providing the best service possible.  So far so good.

Lets pause for an interlude; the wax Alex is using today is Lycon wax.  If it’s not on your radar or already part of your beauty regimen then familiarise yourself with it because you’re going to like this one - It’s very different to traditional strip wax, where the wax is applied to the skin and a cotton strip is used to remove it, removing the very top layer of skin cells with it.  When it comes to intimate waxing, strip waxing can be tricky, the same area shouldn’t be covered twice meaning that if the hair isn’t removed in one go, you’ve got a problem….

Enter Lycon Precision Waxing.  Using only the finest resins, natural ingredients and aromatherapy oils, Lycon delivers superior performance, removing stubborn hair as short as 1mm.  The area being waxed is treated first and then the hot wax is applied directly to the hair, the wax then shrink wraps around the hair meaning that only the hair is removed and not the skin.  Once set, the wax is pulled away from the skin without the need for fabric strips, it means that large areas can be done quickly and because Lycon Hot Waxes can be re-applied to the same area many times there’s no skin trauma or irritation and I can honestly say that it’s relatively pain free.

So, back to Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic, as Alex gets to work, she chats the whole time about anything and everything, from tattoos to dungarees from Topshop, we could be in the line for the checkout at Tesco it’s so relaxed and within a mere twenty minutes I’m done.  On a whim I decide to have my legs and underarms waxed whilst I’m there and before long I’m smooth all over and feeling inspired to book a holiday.  There’s no stickiness or residue that’s often associated with waxing treatments and no redness so I’m good to go.

If you’re a regular hot waxer, a current strip waxer or a wax virgin just looking to take the plunge then I’d highly recommend Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic for several reasons:  1. It’s an uber professional service, there’s no awkwardness, these girls have seen it all before and just want to make you comfortable and give you the treatment you booked in for.  2. Situated above Superdrug on Northumberland Street, it’s a central location in Newcastle city centre meaning that you can be in and out in between hitting the shops and sipping an Americano, no biggie.  3. This is the clincher: This is without doubt, the best hot wax in Newcastle, if not the North East - trust me, I’ve done the research and even had the bruises to prove it.:-/

So, if you want a piece of the action, get yourself booked in with Alex but don’t go telling everyone, it’ll be our little secret, right?

Paloma Faith for Agent Provocateur FW15

Every season I look forward to the new Agent Provocateur drop.  Arguably one of the best lingerie manufacturers out there (I certainly think so anyway), it’s impossible to visit one of their stores, or their online boutique without spending at least £300, but please, feel free to take on the challenge….

Founded in 1994 by Vivienne Westwood’s son Joe Corré and his now ex-wife Serena Rees, the first store was opened on Broadwick Street, Soho, where two shop girls called Alice Hawkins and Paloma Faith were employed pedalling lingerie to the rich and famous.

Fast forward to 2015 and Agent Provocateur is an international brand with 104 stores globally and a seasonal advertising campaign that is anticipated my millions in advance of its release.  Those two shop girls are famous in their own right, Faith for her singing career and quirky sense of style, and Hawkins as a celebrated and renowned photographer.

In a move which brings both the girls and the brand full circle, Faith has been selected to front the Knickers Forever campaign for the Agent Provocateur Fall Winter 2015 campaign, shot by none other than Hawkins and inspired by the polaroids she took in the boutique during her time as a shop girl.

Agent Provocateur is known for its sexy, seductive teaser campaigns and this is no different, sticking to the sexy but accessible theme, Faith poses up a storm in the latest lingerie to hit the boutique and looks like she’s having the time of her life and following in the footsteps of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Rosie Huntington Whiteley I’d say she’s done the brand justice.

So here’s the full campaign, featuring the now infamous pink button through shop girl dress natch, well it would be weird not to right…..?
