Alexander Wang

Carli Pearson, Founder and Creative Director of new womenswear label, CIMONE was trained at Central Saint Martins and prior to launching her own brand, she honed her craft in a variety of senior positions at some of the world’s top houses. She spent her first seven years at Stella McCartney, later moving on to become Design Director at Alexander Wang, Head of Show Collection at Pucci, and Head of Womenswear at McQ, Alexander McQueen.

Her second collection for spring/summer 2017, and first runway collection was shown as part of London Fashion Week’s SS17 season and received to rapturous applause.

A web of contradictions, the collection saw control versus chaos and high-end production values paired with repurposed textures; focusing on the interplay between naivety and self-assuredness.

statement pieces featured unique, interactive embellishment, moving with models bodies and reacting in unique ways, never appearing the same way twice.  A subtle and muted whitewash was brought to life with a vibrant injection of juxtaposed bold colour, appearing as splashes and stripes.

Very obviously influenced by the late Lee Mcqueen, Pearson has focused on confidence as the recurrent theme throughout the SS17 collection - with a little fun thrown in for good measure.

A New Era For Balenciaga

We’re into Day 7 of Paris Fashion Week and this one is more exciting than ever, why?  Because the day is breaking with some big news….

Just days after Alexander Wang‘s final runway show for Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia has been appointed and named as the Creative Director for the iconic fashion house.  For those of you who aren’t familiar, Gvasalia comes fresh from Paris fashion brand Vetements which he runs with his brother Guram, arguably the coolest thing in french fashion at the moment and certainly as simpool (simple + cool) as the brand name suggests.

Vetements takes everyday Fash Pack staples; leather bikers, cigarette pants, skinny jeans, sweaters etc. and flips the vibe to make you want and need them in your wardrobe.  Think recycled jeans made with strips and patches of old hammered denim, biker jackets made with old washed and rewashed leather, and sweats with real frayed edges - basically, Vetements gives you the off-duty model look for everyday with a pinch of oversize thrown in for good measure.

Not (yet) as well known as Alexander Wang, there’s no denying that Gvasalia is cut from the same cloth, graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, he launched his first collection at Tokyo Fashion Week in 2007, before working at Margiela and then Louis Vuitton - pretty damn good credentials.

Isabelle Guichot, president and CEO of Balenciaga, this morning stated: “I am very pleased to welcome Demna Gvasalia as the artistic director of Balenciaga’s collections. He has quickly emerged as the best choice for the new artistic direction of the maison. With his mastery of techniques, his expertise and fashion knowledge, in conjunction with his innovative and carefully considered approach, Demna Gvasalia adopts a unique vision of the designer’s role today and thus recalls Cristobal Balenciaga’s own vision. I am confident that he will succeed in embracing Balenciaga’s core values and developing them in harmony with today’s global changes.”

And so begins a new, simpool (it’s a thing) era for Balenciaga and I can’t wait to see how this one unfolds….

Balmain’s Supermodel Sister Squad

If there’s one thing you can count on from a Balmain campaign, it’s that it’ll be packed to the rafters with bombshells and the Fall / winter 2015 offering is testament to that.  Olivier Rousteing has upped his game and packed twice the punch into this latest offering by turning his Balmain Army into a family affair, yep, it’s official, the Balmain Supermodel Sister Squad is here. Tapping up Gigi and Bella Hadid, Joan and Erika Smalls, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner for the latest campaign, shot by Mario Sorrenti, the campaign is bold and colourful with gem coloured hues and sultry make up - everything we’ve come to love and expect from Rousteing and his Creative Team. For the latest visuals, Rousteing stayed true to that aesthetic by opting for dark smoky eyes on each set of siblings maintaining that the girls should look powerful and sultry in the spirit of Helmut Newton.

“This season’s Balmain campaign was inspired by a brief, key moment that happened while we were shooting our last campaign.  While I watched Mario capture a kiss last fall, I was struck by the love and emotion that I was witnessing in front of me. Starting with a determination to once again focus on the beauty of an intimate connection, my team and I quickly concluded that a celebration of the unique unconditional love of sibling is a natural progression from the spirit of last season.” - Olivier Rousteing, Creative Director, Balmain.

Also featuring in the campaign are Armando and Fernando Cabral with Rousteing saying “They represent the fresh, diverse and open spirit of a new generation of fashion”.  High praise indeed coming from the much applauded Creative Director.  Rousting also teased that Kendall Jenner may front his collaboration with H&M later this year saying that she’s one of his favourite models. balmain8 If this has made you all the more eager to join the Balmain Army, then don’t forget, the Balmain x H&M collection drops November 5th, start sharpening your elbows now… Pixie x

Sam Smith for Balenciaga

Since Sam Smith announced he would be the new face of Balenciaga’s Fall / Winter campaign a few weeks back, we’ve all been waiting to see images.  What with Smith’s turbulent year he needed a break and now that the campaign is here, he might just have it as his fashion credentials look pretty slick…

The campaign, shot by Josh Olins, is in moody black and white and Smith wears monochrome.  We all know that Alexander Wang is a big fan of Smith’s, so a collaboration was always more a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

“Ladies and gentlemen. The time has come for my first ever collaboration with a fashion house. You ready?  So honoured and ecstatic to announce my collaboration with @BALENCIAGA on the upcoming autumn/winter menswear collection! You’ll be able to see my full campaign very soon. So happy.” - Sam Smith via Instagram.

If you think the star looks different in the images, there’s a reason for that -  drastically overhauling his lifestyle in advance of the shoot, Smith lost around a stone in just two weeks claiming he’s never felt healthier.  Don’t panic though, the singer’s appearance hasn’t altered too much, he still has his trademark quiff.

For those in the know, this isn’t Smith’s first brush with fashion, he appeared as the star of Vogue magazine’s #TodayImWearing feature earlier this year and loved it.  So, turns out this guy is a Sam of all trades, who knew?!

2015 CFDA Awards

The CFDA Awards recognise exceptional talent within the fashion industry and this year the nominees were all outstanding within their respective field.

Typically, designers arrive to the awards ceremony with a muse dressed to impress in something from the Designer’s current collection and competition on this years CFDA Awards red carpet was fierce.  from Anna Ewers in an Alexander Wang pailette dress with stomp boots, Amanda Seyfried in glittering Rodarte, right through to Janelle Monae in a stunning Tadashi Shoji cape dress, the red carpet was awash with knockout frocks.

There were a variety of presenters including Kim Kardashian and Taraji P. Henson giving out the awards, all eyes were on Kim Kardashian in Proenza Schouler as she hit the event within hours of announcing her second pregnancy, and the unveiling of the Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair cover.

Karlie Kloss never gives less than fantastic on the red carpet and this event was no different, wearing a DVF floor length Spanish inspired polka dot frock cut low at the front, the model looked phenomenal and confessed that under her gown, she wore flat shoes all night and felt great.

Models of the moment Natasha Poly and Gigi Hadid lit up the red carpet in Michael Kors; Poly in a statement red dress and Hadid in a glittering gold flared leg jumpsuit.

Juliette Lewis looked ethereal as she floated on to the red carped wearing a two piece Christian Siriano princess gown.  I have to admit, I had an audible gasp when I saw this gorgeous gown.

My ultimate favourite of the night was Diane Kruger, we all know the girl got immense fashion game and in a Prabal Gurung red garnet bustier gown, she was On Fleek.  As a wildcard runner up, I’m giving special credit to model Binx Walton for her conceptual Hood By Air creation, incidentally, Shayne Oliver of Hood By Air took home the award for Swarovski Award for Menswear.

“I am so glad to know there is life after winning a lifetime achievement award” Tom Ford on being named the CFDA Menswear Designer of the year 2015.

Wanna Be in Wang’s Gang #AWF15

Day 3 of NYFW brings with it the hot ticket; Alexander Wang.  it’s always a show that’s guaranteed to turn heads and #AWF15 was no different.  The collection was a departure from the cut and style we’ve come to expect from Alexander Wang with the designer himself saying “I wanted to go somewhere new and completely opposite.”  That statement certainly delivered its objective.

Models Behati Prinsloo and Kendall Jenner walked for Wang and both sent social media into a frenzy Tweeting and Instagramming pictures from backstage as they were being made up.

The models walked to The Day is My Enemy, a forthcoming release from the sixth studio album by The Prodigy and the lyrics and distinct grunge metal fusion sound gave an idea of what was to come.  Dark apocalyptic angels stormed down the runway with faces like thunder, hair was wet and matted and make up was dark.  “The idea behind the hair was that it should look dark and dirty, as if matted with blood” said one of the stylist team.

The collection itself was fierce and heavy, laden with chain mail and netting with a splash of red thrown in giving a nod to early nineties grunge.  A fusion of grunge and metal, just like the music, this was an edgy, still very feminine collection which was borne from the darkest depths of Alexanders mind and translated into something very wearable and very striking.  This was a far cry from anything Alexander has presented before and that was his exact mission, to take this #AWF15 collection to new territory.  Models wore heavy chunky footwear including some super stomp boots that wouldn’t look out of place on Charli XCX.  By Fall 2015 the high street will be awash with tributes to this collection and all the cool kids will be wearing it willingly in homage.

The FROW was undeniably A-list, fresh from his own Kanye West x Adidas presentation on Day 2, Kanye brought along Kim and North West who were sat with Nicki Minaj and gave endless photo opportunities for the baying paparazzi.

North West wore bespoke Alexander Wang (natch), a mini version of one of the looks shown on the runway but even this wasn’t enough to stop the mini fashionista from throwing her second diva strop of NYFW. (Smirk)

As the show closed, Alexander made a quick jog out on to the runway pausing only to wave before disappearing again.  So there we have it, an insight into a far darker version of Alexander Wang, proving that re-invention doesn’t have to be light.  This is a collection for dark angels everywhere, or at least in the upper echelon of society, expect to see Rihanna rocking this soon.
